Lower ABV cocktails to enjoy guilt-free this Ginuary

Mermaid Gin & Tea Cocktails with Cucumber and Mint

The new year may have arrived, along with resolutions and health kicks, but we believe that a little indulgence is good for the soul. Instead of going dry, we’re embracing Ginuary with a mindful hand by experimenting with smaller measures and long serves to keep our spirits up on these long winter days. Try our lower ABV favourites during your Ginuary celebrations using simple ingredients to avoid those January blues.

Gin & Tea

Created by mindful mixology expert Camille Vidal and featured on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, the Gin & Tea infuses the savoury flavours of Mermaid with the fresh elements of green tea for a truly unique twist on the G&T. Green tea has a boatload of health benefits, as it’s high in antioxidants as well as inflammatory properties, making it a truly mindful mixer. Try other fruit teas for further flavour exploration!

  • 25ml Mermaid Gin
  • 10ml elderflower cordial
  • Top up with green tea and tonic water
  • Garnish with a cucumber ribbon, lime wheel and mint sprig

Firstly you’ll need to brew your green tea, using hot water and a teabag. Steep to the desired strength and allow to cool. Take your cucumber ribbon and place it around the outside of the glass, then fill the glass with ice. Build the rest of the ingredients, topping up with equal measures of green tea and tonic water and stir gently to keep the cucumber in place. Finish with a garnish of fresh mint and lime.

B-Side

Perfect for using up that Christmas sherry, the B-Side is the refreshing and citrus-infused post-festive lift you’ve been looking for. Grab that cocktail shaker out of the cupboard as you’ll need it to shake up a storm and don’t worry yourself trying to guess the measurements, as a handy tablespoon is 15ml.

  • 15ml Mermaid Gin
  • 45ml Fino Sherry
  • 15ml lime juice
  • 15ml lemon juice
  • 15ml sugar syrup
  • Top up with soda water
  • Garnish with lemon and lime wheels and a mint sprig

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into an ice-filled high ball glass. Top up with soda water and garnish with lemon and lime wheels and fresh mint.

Mermaid & Tonic

Finally, in true Ginuary style, we feel it’s only right to take a moment to appreciate the classic G&T. Usually best served as a double, a single shot offers a lower ABV with maximum enjoyment during those cosy January weekends. Although once believed to prevent malaria while at sea, sadly tonic water has no real benefits and can prove quite calorific, so light tonic is recommended not only to help out with those new year resolutions but also to allow the Mermaid to shine through.

Take a tumbler or copa glass, fill with ice and add your measure of Mermaid. Top up with tonic water to taste, and finish with a garnish of cucumber and just a few juniper berries to complement Mermaid’s savoury flavours.
